couple standing a part

If your relationship has hit troubled waters but you are not sure yet whether you want to divorce or dissolve a civil partnership then a separation agreement could be a good option for you.

It is a written contract that details the financial agreements you will abide by when you stop living together. Separation agreements are legally binding and stop each party making claims in the event of divorce or death and have consideration as to your financial matters, including division of assets and debts. They can be a way of giving you peace of mind during a difficult time, while you pause to consider the best way forward for your family whether you are in a marriage, civil partnership, or cohabitation relationship.

If you are separating from your partner, you should also consider updating any wills, power of attorney or pension nominations that include them.

What are the next steps?

Your situation following separation can feel very uncertain and unsettling. The path ahead may not be at all clear, and the enormity of everything you need to think about and work through can be quite overwhelming.

Our Family Law team has produced a short guide setting out some information and practical steps which may help guide you through the initial stages of your separation.
