Sector expertise

The Energy & Natural Resources sector is going through a period of great change. With oil price fluctuations, climate change, ongoing market regulations, new technologies and fuel poverty affecting projects, we understand the pressure some of our clients are under. At the same time, renewable energy is growing at an immense rate. The vast expanse of land, plentiful wind, rivers, waves, tide and sunshine available in Scotland and the rest of the UK provides a great opportunity to develop renewables projects. Furthermore, the sector continues to develop ever more innovative technologies and systems to support it.

Our lawyers have excellent environmental experience. When it comes to renewable energy, we have assisted clients with onshore wind projects, hydro and solar energy and biomass, providing advice and assistance with insider knowledge and practical know-how. We have good links with Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Government, ideally placing us at the forefront of development.

We ensure we can offer clients the most up-to-date and relevant industry insights by immersing ourselves within the sector. We are not just lawyers, but contributors to the development of the sector as a whole, and to the UK economy. For example, MacRoberts was involved in advising Edinburgh Community Solar (ECS) on the UK’s largest community solar power scheme. Furthermore, Nick Jones is a member of the Scottish Renewables Onshore Wind Group, and the Scottish Property Federation Building Standards and Sustainability Working group, meaning that he is not only well-informed about developments in the sector, but actually involved in shaping the future of Energy & Natural Resources policy.

“Innovative, collaborative, pioneering and approachable, the MacRoberts’ Energy & Natural Resources team have in-depth knowledge of both the challenges and opportunities facing clients in this sector – and the practical know-how to meet them.”

  • Acting for a client as applicant for consent to develop a section 36 wind farm in Cloich Forest, Peeblesshire.

  • Representing the developer client in four conjoined planning appeal hearings into suspensive conditions not discharged by the Council in respect of a wind farm in East Ayrshire.

  • Lead solicitors and advocate at forthcoming Public Local Inquiry into a large windfarm in Sutherland.
  • Advising clients who were developing and funding a 500kW community hydro scheme at Rumbling Bridge, Kinross, in relation to option agreements and leases for 14 landowners.
