A huge well done to everyone who took part in Sleep in the Park. With temperatures in Edinburgh plummeting to -4C, it was certainly an eye-opening experience for all involved, and a relief that this was just for one night. It is sadly a reality for many who don’t have a choice. A team of 18 from MacRoberts raised over £5,000 and the overall event raised over £4 million. This is part of Social Bite’s mission to eradicate homelessness in Scotland for good.
Following on from the success of the Scottish SME Awards, the inaugural Scottish Business Insider SME Conference took place at The Studio in Glasgow this week (30th November), at which MacRoberts was a key sponsor.
The conference focused on what is a vital part of the Scottish business community, bringing together SMEs from across Scotland and giving them the opportunity to engage with business leaders and companies who can offer an insight into successful growth and diversity. Hosted by journalist and broadcaster Stephen Jardine, the conference featured panel discussions on leadership, PR and marketing, technology and finance.
Last night (30th November), a delegation from MacRoberts attended the British Legal Awards in London where we were shortlisted for Commercial Team of the year for the second successive year. Although we didn’t win, it was a great profile- raising exercise with London firms not least because we were the only Scottish-based firm to make the shortlist, and one of our Infrastructure & Projects Partners, Rod Munro’s, kilt even featured on the Twitter wall!
In mid-November, the New York Law Journal published a review of Guide to Cybersecurity Due Diligence in M&A Transactions, the book co-edited by Tom Smedinghoff and Roland Trope, and that included among its nine contributing authors, CLC members William Denny, David Flint, Candace Jones, Tom, and Roland.
Team MacRoberts is gearing up to brave the cold and take part in Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park event in Edinburgh on 9th December, which aims to raise £4 million to eradicate homelessness in Scotland over a five year period. As well as our online fundraising page, which can be found here, we have been holding various internal fundraising events including a bake sale in the Glasgow office at the end of October, a clothing and jewellery sale, a pub quiz in Edinburgh last night and raffle ticket sales in Glasgow today, all raising money for Sleep in the Park.
On 31st October, members of our Real Estate team, Ian Bowie, David McGuire and Amy Drew visited Dewar’s bonded warehouse site at Poniel, near Lesmahagow. MacRoberts acted for Dewar’s around five years ago in the land acquisition and then assisted with the suite of professional appointments and building contracts required for the subsequent development of the site.
They were given a tour of the hall where new made spirit is received by tanker from the various distilleries in Scotland operated by Dewar’s. The spirit is put into casks and then stacked in warehouses for the requisite period of maturation (minimum of three years). The same hall then decants the matured product (by that time, whisky) from the casks and puts it into tanker to be taken by road to Dewar’s bottling hall in the east end of Glasgow (where a MacRoberts contingent paid a visit in March this year). They were also taken to a couple of the 18 warehouses to see the maturing spirit. Dewar’s own some undeveloped land at Poniel which is intended for development into warehousing. The current built capacity is approximately 1.2m casks and the additional capacity is the same again, adding significantly to Dewar’s overall bonded warehouse capacity.
At MacRoberts, we see the purpose of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as two-fold: firstly, to help us give something back to the community in which we work; and secondly, to foster a team spirit within the firm, bonding people together and making us closer as work colleagues, generating a pride in who we are and how we work, which translates to a better service to our clients. As part of our approach to CSR, we supported The Prince’s Trust Awards 2017, which took place in Edinburgh on 26th October. We sponsored the Young Ambassador of the Year Award, which was presented to Alice Castle and recognises young people who are exceptional Young Ambassadors for the Trust, volunteering their time to share their personal experiences and inspire others.
