James has specialised in the private client field for almost 20 years.
He advises on Inheritance Tax planning and Capital Gains Tax mitigation, with an emphasis on creating tax efficient wills and estate planning schemes, often working as part of a cross-divisional team to provide bespoke advice on personal tax issues.
James has particular experience in advising clients on issues surrounding adult incapacity, including applications for and administration of guardianship orders and continuing and welfare powers of attorney. He provides advice on the creation, use and variation of trusts for asset protection and tax planning purposes, and for charitable causes. He is regularly consulted in relation to the creation and administration of Personal Injury Trusts.
James is a member of The Society of Trust and Executry Practitioners (STEP), the international association of private client practitioners, and is a tutor on the Private Client course for the Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Glasgow. He has also written articles for The Herald, Scottish Field, and The Scots Law Times on private client issues.
