John specialises in the defence of corporate criminal prosecutions raised in Scotland by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. He is a criminal Solicitor Advocate with over 35 years’ experience in defending clients in the criminal courts, and his background is in protecting corporate clients as well as individual directors and officers from regulatory and criminal investigations.
He will regularly conduct internal investigations on behalf of clients where a regulatory breach or criminal offence is suspected. He acts for companies facing investigations from regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and the Economic Crime Unit of Police Scotland. He will conduct investigations and advise clients on the self-reporting provisions of the Bribery Act 2010 and the Modern Slavery Act 2015. John works across all sectors, from construction to energy, food and drink to manufacturing and marine. He has defended some of the UK’s biggest companies in a number of Scotland’s biggest corporate investigations and prosecutions.
John has lectured and tutored in Advanced Criminal Law at Glasgow University, holds a Masters Degree in Construction Law, is a member of the White Collar Crime Committee of the American Bar Association and a former President of the Glasgow Bar Association. In 2016, he was named Scotland’s Lawyer of the Year.
