Media Reports Reveal Some of the World’s Most Expensive Divorces
The divorces of several extremely wealthy couples have recently been reported in the media, including some that have come close to winning the title of most expensive divorce ever.
China’s Most Expensive Divorce
One of these stories concerns the marriage breakdown of Chinese billionaire Zhou Yahui, who made his fortune in the gaming industry and whose company is the majority shareholder in the gay dating app Grindr.
Very little appears to be known about his wife, Li Qiong, and it is unclear how long the couple had been married, but together they owned assets worth a staggering $3.45 billion, reports the Daily Mail.
Under the terms of the divorce settlement, Li received shares in her husband’s company worth an estimated $1.1 billion, making the divorce the most expensive seen in China, and one of the most expensive in the world.
Other Expensive Divorces
Other divorces to feature in the world’s ‘most expensive’ list include that of Formula one billionaire Bernie Eccleston, who paid a divorce settlement of $1.3 billion after his 24-year marriage to ex-wife Slavica came to an end in 2009.
In 2015, Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev had to pay an expensive settlement to his ex-wife Elena when their 23-year marriage ended in divorce. The exact amount remains undisclosed, but he had earlier been directed by the courts to pay $600 million.
Although not quite on the scale as some of the cases mentioned above, a divorce currently ongoing in the UK has been described as having the potential to be one of the most expensive to take place in the UK.
Richard Caring made his fortune in the restaurant and night club business, and is thought to be worth an estimated £700 million, reports the Telegraph.
He recently separated from his wife Jacqui, to whom he had been married for 43 years, and now lives with another woman. He and Jacqui have two children together, and he also now has a child with his new partner.
No details of any proposed divorce settlement have been revealed, but there has been speculation in the media that Jacqui will be entitled to around half of her husband’s wealth, amounting to around £350 million.
Darts Legend Finalises Divorce
A third widely-reported, but not quite as expensive, divorce is that of darts legend, Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, who was married for 26 years.
He separated from his wife, Yvonne, in 2014 and their divorce has now been finalised in the courts, reports the Daily Mail. The couple have four children together, who are now all adults.
Phil Taylor is thought to be worth around £3 million, and under the terms of the divorce he has been directed to pay around half of this to his ex-wife.
The judge hearing the case commented that Yvonne had been a home-maker throughout the marriage and no longer had any realistic earning ability. The settlement includes a lump sum of £780,000, together with investment properties amounting to £350,000 and a £149,000 pension pot. Yvonne will also receive a property Phil owned in Tenerife.
